Clairo AI Partners with Icelandic Cloud Service Provider, Responsible Compute

June 6, 2024

LONDON, June 2024 - This week, Clairo AI has officially partnered with Responsible Compute, a Cloud Provider based in Iceland that specialises in low emission AI/ML infrastructure. Through this partnership, Clairo AI remains committed to developing a completely net-zero generative AI platform.

Responsible Compute is a cloud service provider born out of the collaboration between IT Provider Origo and Borealis Data Center, aimed at providing sustainable High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning cloud architecture to its clients through effectively 100% sustainable sources, using hydro and geothermal energy. Based in Iceland, whose national power grid is considered to be among the most reliable in the world, Responsible Compute allows its users to lower their carbon footprint while still delivering high-performance solutions.

"Responsible Compute is extremely happy to say that we are partnering with Clairo AI. The extreme growth of energy use in AI related infrastructure will continue so providers and users need to show awareness and responsibility in their provider choice, this of course applies both to environmental, security and legal implications," said Kristján Hafsteinsson, CEO at Responsible Compute.

Founded earlier this year by James Faure, Clairo AI is a subscription-based generative AI platform for enterprises. Dedicated to providing a secure and private tool that does not compromise the sustainability commitments of its users, Clairo AI’s collaboration with Responsible Compute ensures regulatory compliance and economic predictability for its clients.

“AI has the ability to change the world. People and businesses can solve some of the world's greatest problems. But at scale, it will require significant energy resources. Clairo AI is committed to supporting Sustainable AI by deploying AI that minimises the effect on the environment,” said James Faure, Founder and CEO of Clairo AI. “We are proud to announce our official partnership with Responsible Compute, to host some of our large language models in Iceland.”

The collaboration between Clairo AI and Responsible Compute derives from James’ mission to combat the environmental impact of AI solutions, particularly those that demand substantial computational resources. The carbon emissions linked to training large AI models, and the energy usage of data centres hosting these services, are considerable. Conventional AI operations, dependent on non-renewable energy sources, contribute to CO2 emissions, intensifying the issues of climate change and global warming. Growing concerns have led to the emergence of Green AI, an approach that aims to reduce carbon emissions by building less energy-intensive models, promote sustainable practices within the field of tech, and use AI technologies to directly address environmental concerns.

Clairo AI’s partnership with Responsible Compute will be central to the team’s mission to achieve net-zero status. “As we look forward to developing a sustainable generative AI tool for enterprises across all sectors, we are grateful to Responsible Compute for providing the infrastructure to store our data securely and sustainably”, said Faure.
